Top-Up Degrees Explained: Turn Your HND or Foundation Degree into a Full Bachelor's

If you already hold an HND or a foundation degree, you may be closer to a full Bachelor's than you think. A top-up degree is the route that gets you there, and it is often quicker than people expect.

What is a top-up degree?

A top-up degree adds the final year of a Bachelor's degree onto a qualification you already have, such as an HND or a foundation degree. Because you have already completed study at Level 4 and Level 5, you join at the final stage and finish with a full Level 6 Bachelor's, usually in about one year of full-time study.

In other words, you are not starting a degree from scratch. You are completing one. The two years you have already put in are recognised, and the top-up adds the missing piece at the top.

Who can do a top-up?

Top-up degrees are designed for people who already hold a Level 5 qualification in a related subject. That most commonly means an HND or a foundation degree. The subject of your top-up usually needs to line up with what you studied before, so the new year builds on your existing knowledge rather than starting from scratch.

This makes it a natural next step for people who finished an HND, perhaps went into work for a while, and now want the full degree. Your earlier study does not expire, so coming back after a break is common and completely normal.

How long does a top-up take?

Full time, a top-up is typically around one year. Part-time options can spread that over a longer period, which suits people balancing study with work or family. Either way, you are adding the final piece rather than repeating what you have already done, which is why it is one of the most efficient routes to a Bachelor's.

Why choose a top-up degree?

  • It recognises the study you have already completed, so you do not repeat it.
  • It is usually the fastest way from a Level 5 qualification to a full Bachelor's.
  • It can open doors that ask for a degree, including some postgraduate study and certain roles.
  • It lets you study now, even if you stepped away from education for a while after your HND.
  • It often fits neatly around work, especially with part-time or flexible study options.

What is the difference between a top-up and Direct Level 5 entry?

They sound similar but are not the same. A top-up adds the final year, Level 6, onto a qualification you already hold. Direct Level 5 entry brings you in one stage earlier, at the second year of a degree, so you complete both Level 5 and Level 6. Which one fits depends on exactly how much you have already studied, and it is worth getting that checked.

What is the final year of a top-up like?

The top-up year takes you to the level of a final-year degree student, so it tends to be more independent than earlier study. You can expect a deeper focus on your subject, more self-directed work, and often a substantial project or piece of research that pulls your learning together.

For people who have been working since their HND, this can feel like a step up, and that is normal. The skills you have built in employment, such as managing your time and meeting deadlines, often transfer well and can make the year more manageable than you might expect.

Will my top-up be a real Bachelor's degree?

Yes. When you complete a top-up, you finish with a full Bachelor's degree at Level 6, the same level you would reach by studying all three years in one go. The route in is different, but the destination is the same recognised qualification.

What should I check before applying?

Two things matter most: that your existing qualification is at the right level, and that the subject is a good match for the top-up you want. Entry requirements vary between programmes, so it is worth getting these checked early rather than guessing. It also helps to think about whether full-time or part-time study suits your current commitments.
